Doesn't matter what it means, so long as it abides by the designation regulations:
Fighter/Attack aircraft get a name beginning with F, example: Su-22 Fitter
Bombers: B, Yak-28 Brewer
Transports/Airliners: C, An-2 Colt
Miscilaneous (AWACS, refueling): M, Il-78 Midas


One syllable words are for prop aircraft.
Two syllable words for jets.

Mikoyan's NATO designations:
Fargo
Fagot
Fresco
Farmer
Fishbed
Flogger
Foxbat
Fulcrum
Foxhound

Russian subs have a NATO designation system too, but I'm not sure how that works.
